1. You earn more experience in a ship that is lower level than your opponent, so use the lowest level ship that you can complete missions quickly in. This is why ships like the raa mastercraft are great even up to level 50.
2. Level with friends! 8/12 grinding fleets will often let noobs tag along. This is a good way to make friends, get quick exp, and get some nice drops. Often these will be to create pvp zones, so this is also a good way to break in RvR.
3. Keep your AC gear upgraded! Every few levels check the AC trainer and keep your sword max damage. This will greatly reduce the difficulty of missions.
4. If you PvP, keep an eye out for several important chains in the mid 30s. Many of these missions give important items you will want for pvp, so you may as well do it for the exp also. In particular, look for sonjas dissertation, the albatross, the figurehead, lucks, the musketeer's pistol, and so on.
5. Lastly, avoid killing ANY fleet on the OS other than navy fleets (8/12 packs) or evil pirates (you can kill ironsides, vejaoes, and so on but not brethren). It’s best not to damage your reputation with any faction until you know for sure what you want to do, so avoid any actions that hurt your reputation. And don't kill things like Mississippi trader companies and the like!
It takes most casual gamers 2 weeks to hit 50 for their first time (~20-25 hours total gameplay). Hardcore gamers can do it much faster; some have hit 50 in less than a weekend!
